What is Wind Hunter?

Shape the Future with Wind and Hydrogen

The Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Wind Hunter project aims to create a cargo ship capable of traveling the world without relying on fuel and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by utilizing the limitless energy from wind over the ocean. This concept may seem like a dream, but it is not unattainable.

The Wind Hunter operates by harnessing wind power through sails and producing electricity and hydrogen through spinning water turbines. The stored hydrogen, in the form of MCH, acts as a fuel cell when wind is weak and provides electricity to power electric propellers. A demonstration test was successfully completed using a yacht in Omura Bay, Nagasaki Prefecture. The next step is to construct a 60-70 meter long hydrogen-producing vessel with multiple sails, set to begin in 2024. The Wind Hunter seeks out areas with strong winds to find the most efficient route across the sea.

By 2030, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines aims to build a large, zero-emissions cargo ship powered by hydrogen. While there are still challenges to overcome, the Mitsui O.S.K. Lines is up to the task and believes that taking on challenges is the key to success. The Wind Hunter project represents a step towards a more sustainable future.
